Most of the sessions will use an eclectic approach, combining therapeutic techniques from different therapies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy, Social Skills Training, Spiritual Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and more.

MARLEEN FILIMON

Registered Psychotherapist & Owner

I help teens, tweens, and adults, who experience stress and discomfort due to anxiety, a traumatic experience, relationship issues, low self-esteem, stress, and procrastination, make lasting and positive changes so they can start living a healthy and fulfilling life.

My areas of specialization are

  • Emergency Responders (i.e. Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Paramedics, and ER personnel)
  • Anxiety Disorders
  • Stress Management
  • PTSD and Trauma

We live in a "fix it world"; don't like your hair colour, go to the hairsalon and pick another colour. Don't like your wardrobe, go to Winners and buy a whole new one. Don't like your anxiety, get rid of it... Hold on... That somehow doesn't work. What if you get rid of your anxiety, or stress, or sadness, what kind of human being would you be? I get it, unwanted, problematic emotions and feelings are painful and you don't want them anymore.

Chances are, you've already tried a bunch of different methods to "get rid" of your struggles. But what if I told you there is another way of looking at your struggles. What if you would start looking at your anxiety, or stress, or low self-esteem as a "challenge" instead of a "problem"? All of a sudden, a whole new world of endless opportunities opens up. Instead of looking at your depression as "I am my depression", you will start looking at it as "I am not my depression".

I will guide you to start looking at your struggles as a phase in life you can overcome and learn from. Together we will venture into an inspiring and eye-opening journey in which you will re-discover yourself and learn to work with your life struggles. Working on yourself is hard work, but soon you will see the benefits and start living a life without being held back by anxiety, a past traumatic incident, or low self-esteem.

In my session I use a combination of different therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, and Mindfulness. I focus my sessions on teaching you coping skills that I will ask you to practice at home. Together we will explore what works best for you, and make a plan on how you can start feeling empowered and in control of your life.

A little (academic) background info on me:
In my professional career, I obtained both my Bachelor in Psychology, my first Master in Cognitive Psychology and my second Master in Clinical Psychology from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands. I am registered with the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists (OACCPP) and the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and have worked as a therapist and counsellor for multiple mental health hospitals and organizations all over the world, including the United Nations in Haiti and a Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in The Netherlands. I have many years of experience helping individuals overcome their fears and find their true potential by dealing with their trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, self-esteem and assertiveness issues, obsessive-compulsive behaviours and stress.

In my personal life, I have traveled all over. Born in The Netherlands, moved to West Africa (Abidjan) when I was 6 years old, then onto Saudi-Arabia (Jeddah) where I spend the majority of my teen years, back to Holland to focus on University (Leiden), then to Egypt (Cairo) to learn Arabic, back to Holland for my second Master of Science (Clinical Psychology), all the way across the ocean to Haiti (UN work), and now in Canada. Everything I have learned from living abroad, and from my many travels around the globe, I use in my sessions. I have experienced and lived in different cultures, languages, and norms, giving me a broad understanding of people's backgrounds and thinking patterns.

DEANNA BERVOETS

Clinical Social Worker/Psychotherapist

(* Not Affiliated with PMPTherapy)
I help children, youth and adults develop strategies to manage and cope with personal, social, and familial distress.  I specialize in working with families who are being impacted by divorce/separation.  In some cases, children are inadvertently caught in the middle of parents’ conflict, which sometimes leads to them struggling with self-regulation, aligning with one parent, hating the other parent, and much more.  These can have a detrimental impact, if children do not have a healthy outlet to share their feelings and work through their distress.

My areas of specialization are

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Depression
  • Self-harm
  • Relationship issues
  • Exposure to post-separation conflict (children)

In my sessions I utilize a combination of techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Trauma-Focused Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy.  My experiences in the school board, outpatient mental health, and within child welfare have given me the tools to effectively work with a variety of people.  My passion for helping people stems from my own personal experiences.  Over the years, I have utilized these experiences to help others overcome their challenges.

Throughout my struggle, I was fortunate enough to have a great support network to help me recognize what is important in life. It is my belief that having emotional support is integral in the healing process. One of my colleagues once told me, “Without hope, we don’t get out of bed in the morning.” Hope is the foundation of our healing.

  • Relationship Issues
  • Couples
  • Adolescents
  • Depression

In my sessions, I meet you where you are in your life. The sessions are your time to use as you see fit and to discuss what is most relevant for you.I utilize a variety of therapeutic interventions including Narrative Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and trauma informed therapy. Together, we will examine how your experiences have shaped your beliefs andthoughts about yourself, others, and the world in which you live. I graduated from the University of Toronto in 2010 with a Master's Degree in Social Work after having completed my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Waterloo in 2006. Since this time, I have worked in various corners of Social Work with a major focus on clinical work and counselling. Though my experiences, both personal and professional, I have come to understand the importance of taking care of yourself and I believe that counselling is a big part of this. In our busy lives today, we often list ourselves at the bottom of the priority list and ignore how various life events, even from years past, continue to impact on who we are. I look forward to working with you.

My clinical experience is in working with adults, adolescents, and children who have experienced trauma (emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse). My areas of specialization are

  • Trauma and PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Relationship Issues

I have always loved stories; I believe that when we are able to share our stories with others we increase our sense of connection to ourselves and those around us. I believe that by embracing our story we are able to discover unexpected strength and are drawn into experiences of reconnection and restoration. It is this belief, and the love of stories which drew me to become a therapist. I feel passionate about connecting with your story; hearing about your experiences so far, and supporting you in the incredible story you are continuing to create.

I use a combination of Narrative, Mindfulness-Based, and Cognitive Behavioural approaches in counselling. These approaches are gentle, respectful, and directed by your goals; they create space for insight and self-compassion, and provide opportunities for peaceful growth even in difficult or painful situations. When you come to counselling, the time is yours to grow in new ways, or to reconnect with parts of yourself that have felt lost in a space that is trustworthy and without judgement.

Mental health has a unique meaning for each of us. Having that kind of support through my own challenges was what inspired me to take this professional path in counselling. My goal is to provide a safe and welcoming space where individuals experiencing mental health issues can turn their challenges into opportunities. Through comprehensive counselling and psychotherapy services, I aim to empower individuals to work towards improving their lives. Congratulations on taking this step!

I use a variety of therapeutic interventions in my sessions, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) and Narrative Therapy. My experience has provided me with a wide range of knowledge which includes providing therapy and facilitating groups with youth and with women experiencing trauma, as well as individuals that have experienced motor vehicle accidents. Whether you’re overwhelmed with conflict, searching for healing, or anticipating challenges, allow me to walk alongside you while you strive to reach your goals.
