Registered Psychotherapist & Owner
I work with teens, tweens, and adults, who experience painful emotions and have lingering negative thoughts and images due to anxiety, a traumatic experience, relationship issues, low self-esteem, stress, procrastination, grief, anger, depression, and peer relationships.
My areas of specialization are
- Emergency Responders (i.e. Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Paramedics, and ER personnel)
- Anxiety and Panic
- Stress Management
- PTSD and Trauma
In my session I use a combination of different therapeutic techniques such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance & Commitment Therapy, Narrative Therapy, EMDR, and Mindfulness Therapy. You set the pace, I provide the guidance. My sessions are focused on teaching and practicing coping skills, and delving into deeper, underlying patterns of emotions and behaviors. Together we will explore what works best for you, and make a plan on how you can start feeling empowered and in control of your life.
A little (academic) background info on me:
In my professional career, I obtained both my Bachelor in Psychology, my first Master in Cognitive Psychology and my second Master in Clinical Psychology from the University of Leiden in The Netherlands. I am registered with the Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists (OACCPP) and the College of Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO), and have worked as a therapist and counsellor for multiple mental health hospitals and organizations all over the world, including the United Nations in Haiti and a Forensic Psychiatric Hospital in The Netherlands.
For my work on developing a Peer Helper Networking for the UN Mission in Haiti, myself and the rest of the Staff Counseling Unit received the 2011 UN 21 Award. The UN 21 Awards give recognition to staff members for innovation, efficiency, and excellency in the delivery of the organization's programs and services.
I have also been awarded with a Therapist Recognition Award from Badge of Life Canada, a charity organization supporting Police and Correctional Officers and promoting trauma and PTSD resilience. In order to receive this award, I was nominated by clients for my work helping them with PTSD and Trauma Resilience.
In my personal life, I have traveled all over. Born in The Netherlands, moved to West Africa (Abidjan) when I was 6 years old, then onto Saudi-Arabia (Jeddah) where I spend the majority of my teen years, back to Holland to focus on University (Leiden), then to Egypt (Cairo) to learn Arabic, back to Holland for my second Master of Science (Clinical Psychology), all the way across the ocean to Haiti (UN work), and now in Canada. Everything I have learned from living abroad, and from my many travels around the globe, I use in my sessions. I have experienced and lived in different cultures, languages, and norms, giving me a broad understanding of people's backgrounds and thinking patterns.
I am a Registered Provider with both the Non-Insured Health Benefits Program (NIHB) and the Indian Residential Schools Resolution Health Support Program (IRS RHSP). If you have any questions about this service, please feel free to ask.
