Reduced-Fee Therapy

Affordable Therapy in Burlington, Ontario

Therapy can feel financially out of reach, especially when you need consistent support. Our Supervised Therapy Access Program offers affordable therapy in Burlington without compromising professionalism or clinical oversight.

Sessions are provided by master’s-level therapists in last stages of training, supported through structured supervision within our trauma-informed clinic. This model allows us to make therapy more accessible while maintaining thoughtful, ethical, and well-supported care.

This program is appropriate for adults navigating stress, anxiety, and life transitions, as well as parents seeking support for their teen.

What Is Reduced Fee Therapy?

Reduced fee therapy at Private Matters Psychotherapy is part of our Supervised Therapy Access Program. As a clinic committed to high clinical standards, we train a small number of master’s-level therapists each year as they complete advanced stages of their professional development.

As part of the Supervised Therapy Access Program:

  • Student therapists conduct individual therapy sessions
  • Every case is reviewed through ongoing clinical supervision
  • Treatment plans are developed collaboratively
  • Session notes are reviewed by a senior clinician
  • Ethical and professional standards are upheld at all times

Our student therapists have completed the academic requirements of their graduate programs and are gaining supervised clinical experience as part of their path toward full professional registration. Some are registered as Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying) with the CRPO, while others are completing supervised practicum requirements.

Every therapist in this program works within a structured supervision model. Treatment plans, clinical direction, and documentation are reviewed in collaboration with an experienced clinical supervisor to ensure care remains ethical, focused, and consistent with our trauma-informed standards.

This structure allows us to provide affordable therapy while maintaining accountability and professional oversight.

What to Expect from Sessions

Sessions in the Supervised Therapy Access Program are structured and consistent, much like therapy with any other member of our team. You’ll typically meet once per week for 60 minutes, either virtually or in person depending on availability.

Together, you and your therapist will clarify goals, explore patterns that may be contributing to stress or anxiety, and work toward practical, meaningful change. Sessions are collaborative and paced according to your readiness.

Student therapists are trained in evidence-based approaches such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), narrative therapy, and mindfulness-informed strategies. Your work is supported through ongoing supervision to ensure your care remains focused and aligned with best practices.

You don’t need to arrive with perfect insight or a clear roadmap. Therapy is a process, and we’ll build it together.

Did you know? Every student therapist at PMPTherapy is supported by a licensed clinical supervisor behind the scenes.

What This Program Can Help With

The Supervised Therapy Access Program is well-suited for short- to medium-term therapy focused on structured support and skill development. It may be appropriate if you are experiencing:

  • Anxiety, overthinking, and constant worry
  • Low mood, numbness, or lack of motivation
  • Stress, burnout, and emotional overwhelm
  • Grief and life transitions
  • Relationship or family concerns
  • Identity exploration and self-worth
  • Patterns you can’t seem to break
  • Feeling lost, stuck, or unsure where to begin

This program is designed for individuals who are looking for thoughtful, goal-oriented support rather than intensive trauma processing or complex psychiatric care.

For teens (12+), this may include academic pressure, social stress, mild-to-moderate anxiety, or difficulty managing emotions. A parent consultation is required before youth sessions begin.

If your needs fall outside this scope, we will guide you toward a clinician or service that better matches the level of care required.

What This Program Is Not Designed For

While student therapists are skilled, compassionate, and well-supported, there are some situations that fall outside their scope of practice. If your current needs require more advanced clinical support, we’ll help you find the right fit, either within our team or through a trusted referral.

Student therapists are not the right fit if you:

  • Are in acute crisis or have active suicidal ideation
  • Need reports for legal, family court, or insurance purposes
  • Are seeking formal diagnoses
  • Have complex dissociation or untreated PTSD
  • Looking to start trauma therapy or EMDR therapy
  • Require specialized support for eating disorders or substance use

If you’re unsure whether reduced fee therapy is the right fit, a free phone consultation is a great place to start. We’ll help you figure it out, no pressure, no judgment. Our goal is not to turn you away, but to ensure you receive the level of support that best matches your needs.

Why Supervised Therapy Is Still High-Quality Care

Supervised therapy is a structured model of care used across many established training clinics. Within this program, your therapist works in collaboration with an experienced clinical supervisor who provides ongoing consultation and oversight.

This means your treatment plan, clinical direction, and progress are thoughtfully reviewed rather than managed in isolation. You benefit from both your therapist’s direct work with you and the guidance of a senior clinician supporting the process.

The result is therapy that remains intentional, ethically grounded, and aligned with professional standards, while also being more financially accessible.

You’re not getting “discount” therapy, you’re getting supported therapy.

Supervised. Supported. Still real therapy.

FAQ

Is therapy with a student therapist effective?

Yes. Student therapists in our Supervised Therapy Access Program have completed graduate-level training and work within a structured supervision model. Their clinical work is regularly reviewed by an experienced supervisor to ensure care remains thoughtful, ethical, and aligned with professional standards.

Is reduced fee therapy confidential?

Yes. All sessions are confidential and follow the same privacy and professional standards as any other therapy service in our clinic. Clinical supervision focuses on treatment direction and quality of care while maintaining confidentiality in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

How long can I work with a student therapist?

Student therapists complete practicum placements with our clinic that typically last 8 to 12 months. During that time, you can continue working together as long as the fit remains appropriate and your goals align with the scope of the Supervised Therapy Access Program.

As a placement comes to an end, we plan transitions thoughtfully. Depending on your needs, options may include continuing care with another student therapist, transitioning to one of our senior clinicians, or discussing alternative referrals if specialized support is required.

Our goal is to ensure continuity of care and a clear transition plan well before any placement concludes.

How much does affordable therapy cost?

The fee for our affordable therapy option is $70 per 60 minute session.

What happens if my needs are more complex than expected?

If at any point it becomes clear that you would benefit from more advanced trauma care or specialized services, we will discuss next steps and help transition you to the appropriate level of support within our clinic.
